The star of the show here is undoubtedly their Chicken 65 — a fiery, crispy delight that crunches perfectly with each bite, delivering an exhilarating burst of spices and tender chicken. Equally irresistible is their Kothu Parotta, a dish so loved that some patrons travel hours just to savor it. This flavorful medley of shredded parotta, spices, and meat or vegetables is a textural delight that’s both hearty and satisfying. For those who favor rice-based dishes, the Chicken Biriyani and Goat Biriyani wow with their aromatic basmati rice mingled with golden fried onions, rich spices, and melt-in-your-mouth meats.
Chennai Express also excels in South Indian breakfast staples. The Cheese Masala Dosa boasts a golden, crisp exterior with a sumptuous savory filling that captivates the palate. Fans of comfort food will appreciate their Sambar Idly and Onion Uthappam, both whispering homely warmth and subtle spice in every bite. And for something truly unique, the Kozhi Milagu Rasam — a peppery chicken soup — is a vibrant, healing start or finish to any meal.
The menu is undeniably diverse, with creative dishes like Chicken Style Mutton Curry, Gobi Manchurian, and Chilly Paneer offering a wonderful mix of traditional and Indo-Chinese flavors. Don’t miss the Madurai Kothukari Dosa if you’re adventurous — it’s bursting with authentic regional tastes. If you’re after something refreshing to balance the spices, the classic Lassi is cool, creamy, and perfectly soothing.
While the interior might be simplistic and modest, with limited seating as noted by several visitors, the quality and authenticity of the food overwhelmingly compensate. The vibe is casual and unpretentious, making it an ideal spot for casual dinners or takeout. Service is friendly, with attention to detail that makes every visit feel like a special treat.
Customers repeatedly praise the flavor depth and generous portion sizes. Prasanya Murugan describes the food as “Heavenly,” highlighting the hearty servings and fresh feel of the dishes. Shivani Adusumilli has been a loyal fan for over five years, especially cherishing the weekend-only thalappakatti goat biryani, which she calls “very flavorful” with remarkably tender meat. Even with a straightforward atmosphere, Stephen Marone insists the dosa and biriyani hit the mark every time.
Whether you’re a South Indian food aficionado or just discovering this rich culinary world, Chennai Express Restaurant offers a genuine, deeply satisfying experience. Food was Heavenly!!!! One of the best South Indian food…I tried their chicken 65, veg Kothu parotta and chappathi… quantity was very good amount of food for the price. Chicken 65 was piping hot and tasted very good. Kothu parotta was Fabulous ( we travelled 4 hours just for that) and chappathi was very soft and felt fresh no oil was there but gravy that they gave for chappathi was okay. Would Highly recommend this place… Has limited seating and gets crowded easily… As for Ambiance it was not great but Food was too good to notice the Ambiance.
So, I tried out Chennai Express Restaurant for some South Indian food. They definitely have a good selection of dishes – everything from crispy dosas to flavorful biryani and some pretty spicy curries. It's nice to see a decent variety on the menu. Plus, their hours seem pretty convenient if you're looking to order in. Now, the vibe of the place is pretty basic. It's definitely more of a casual, no-frills spot. What was a little different is that it's self-service – you order and pay at the counter before you even sit down to eat. That's fine, but then they still ask for a tip when you pay, which felt a little odd considering the service model. Also, for me personally, it's a bit of a drive – over 20 miles away. So, while the food might be good, the distance makes it less of a go-to option for a quick bite. Overall, Chennai Express seems like a decent option, especially if you're looking to get some South Indian food.
If I rated this lower my in-laws might disown me. It's tough to find good South Indian food, but this place hits the mark. The dosa is amazing and the biryani is delicious. The chicken 65 is also a most have. Only down side is that it looks run down from the outside.
Best Dosa in the DMV area. Seating is very limited. And had to wait little longer than expected. But it worth. Food was delicious. Fall in love with their Dosa. Parata was good too.
Best South Indian food in the area, must try the thalappakatti goat biryani available only on weekends, we’ve been ordering it every couple of weeks for 5+ years now! Very flavorful and the meat is soft. We also regularly order the kotthu parata and enjoy trying the holiday specials, it’s the best way to try something new instead of being tempted by the usual favorites
